Rain Alarm, Receive Precipitation Warnings In Chrome

The Chrome extension Rain Alarm provides users with up to date precipitation warnings. The extension adds an icon to Chrome’s address bar upon installation that acts as a warning indicator, as it changes if it needs to inform the user about local weather warnings. The icon itself is rather small and definitely not the best notification option. Better than that icon is the built-in notifier that displays a small notification message in the operating system whenever the user needs to be notified.

The notification displays information about the precipitation, e.g. snow fall or rain, as well as its reach and strength.

rain alarm

A click opens the rain alarm website with a Google Maps view of the selected location. Here you find precipitation data over time, a local weather map so to speak. You can zoom in and out of the map which seems to be completely independent of the browser extension. Users who just want to use rain alarm this way can open the website to do just that.

precipitation

The website offers precipitation data of the last two hours. You can go back or forward in time to see the intensity at a specific period in time.

The Rain Alarm options can be used to change the location for the weather forecasts and warnings automatically or manually. There is unfortunately no option to use multiple profiles for different locations in the world. Only one location can be active at a time.

rain alarm options

Text notifications can be turned off, and sound notifications turned on here as well. Other options include changing the search radius and interval, the sensitivity which defines when alarms get triggered automatically, the time format and units of measurement.

Rain Alarm can be a handy extension for Chrome users who need to be in the known all the time. It is not a full blown weather extension though, but if precipitation is what you want, then this is what you get.

Are you using weather services or weather extensions? Let me know in the comments.

Regards Office 365 Security Essentials, the publisher says…

Many smaller organizations rely on a few tech savvy managers to ensure that Microsoft Office is configured and deployed to best support core business objectives. If you are one of these indispensable managers, you are probably aware that the online collaboration features of Office 365 also create security risks not associated with desktop versions of Office. In Need2Know: Microsoft Office 365 Security Essentials, author Mike Halsey identifies and explains those risks, and answers essential questions about how to run Office 365 safely and
securely. With a program that eliminates the need for a patchwork of third party solutions, it’s important to harness the tools at your disposal to the fullest.

Microsoft Office 365 Security Essentials shows you how to secure your Office 365 team site, how to manage your users and administrators, and how to employ secure practices with Microsoft and third-party tools, as well as good old common sense. Author Mike Halsey brings wisdom from his extensive work with Microsoft Windows and the Office product family to the table to help you address the security threats you must know how repel in order to protect your company and its assets.

The Ghacks Christmas Giveaway 2011 Starts Tomorrow!

The 4th annual Ghacks Christmas Giveaway starts tomorrow. I did not reveal the products that you could win in previous years. This year, it is going to change to give you enough time to participate in the giveaways that you are really interested in. Today, I’m going to post general rules about the giveaway as well as the first 12 programs that I’m going to review and give away.

Regarding the schedule: Please note that there may be circumstances where I cannot post a review and giveaway on a particular day. This can happen if something unforeseen happens, an accident for instance, or if I do not get a reviewer’s copy of the program in time to review it.

Giveaway Rules

Here are the rules of the giveaway:

  • Each day, one software review will be posted. The number of licenses that users can win will be mentioned in the review.
  • You can participate in the review by leaving a comment. Sometimes, I may post a question that I’d like you to answer. It would be nice if you’d be doing that.
  • You are only allowed to post under one name and email address. Users who post with multiple aliases will be banned from the giveaway. You can comment more than once, but only the first comment will count for the drawing of winners.
  • You are free to spread the word and tell others about the giveaway (friends, family). It would really be nice if you could.
  • The winners will be mentioned on the Ghack’s Facebook Page and Ghack’s Google Plus page. Both pages can be accessed even by non-members of said social networking sites.
  • Winners will be notified by email. Make sure you enter your email address correctly in the comment form. Sometimes I get keys right away and will mail you the keys. Sometimes, companies may require additional information, e.g. your name. In this case, I will mail you and ask for those information.
  • I expect winners to respond in five business days. Winners who have not responded in that time will forfeit the license and I will award it to someone else instead.

The applications Day 1 – Day 12:

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Google Starts Rolling Out Yet Another Design Change

Google about six months ago started to roll out the black bar on top of most of their properties. This bar displayed the logged in Google user’s username, linked to popular Google destinations such as Google Search, Maps or Mail, and displayed options to modify user account related preferences, privacy settings or settings that affected the Google product the user was using.

Today Google announced that they have started to roll out a new look for some of their most popular properties. The change affects Google Search, News, Maps, Translate, Gmail and other products that have not been mentioned explicitly in the announcement on the Google Blog site.

google bar

The new design does away with the black bar and replaces it with a much smaller header element that is called the gray bar. This bar consists of three different regions. First the Google logo on the left incorporating a drop-down menu, a search for the particular Google product the user is currently using and a third area with sharing and account related links.

google bar layout

The down arrow on the right side of the Google logo leads to a product list. This makes it possible to navigate to other Google properties with two clicks from any of the supported Google product pages. This works even if the user is not logged into any Google account.

Search is now displayed in the middle of the gray bar. Users can use it to search for information provided by the Google Product they are currently using.

The sharing section finally confirms Google’s intention to push the Google+ social networking service. It is the only Google product that is linked prominently in the gray bar. The account picture finally displays links to the user’s Google profile, Google+ as well as general account and privacy related settings. a new Switch account option has been added to give users an option to switch accounts more conveniently.

The changes are being rolled out currently with no information when they may reach all users. I for one see the black bar on all Google properties and all web browsers at the moment.

Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview 4 Available

The last test version of Internet Explorer 10 shipped exclusively with the Windows 8 Developer Preview. The platform preview that shipped with the Windows 8 system was actually the third preview version that Microsoft released publicly (see Microsoft Pushes Out Second Internet Explorer 10 Preview for previous coverage). Microsoft today made available the fourth platform preview, which is again only compatible with the Windows 8 developer preview. This basically means that users can only install the newest version on systems running Windows 8.

The new version adds support for additional HTML5 technologies including File API improvements, Web Worker Thread Pooling and HTML5 video improvements. Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview 4 offers support for new CSS3 and DOM technologies as well.

Users interested in the browser’s revision history can look at the history page here for a list of all modifications and changes to the web browser.

  • Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) for safe use of XMLHttpRequest across domains.
  • File API Writer support for blobBuilder allowing manipulation of large binary objects in script in the browser.
  • Support for JavaScript typed arrays for efficient storage and manipulation of typed data.
  • CSS user-select property to control how end-users select elements in a Web page or application.
  • Support for HTML5 video text captioning, including time-code, placement, and captioning file formats.

Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview 4 scores 299 points and 6 bonus points on the HTML5 Test website.

internet explorer 10 platform preview 4

That’s an increase of 68 points over the second platform preview released earlier this year. In comparison, Firefox 10 Aurora scores 314+9, Google Chrome 17 Dev 344+13 and Opera 11.60 325+9 points. Compare that to Internet Explorer’s 9 score of 141+5 and you will realize that Microsoft made a huge jump in HTML5 compatibility.

Take a look at the following video to see some of the browser’s HTML5 technologies in action.

The Internet Explorer blog post offers additional information for web developers who want to take a closer look at the technologies that are now supported by the browser.

Windows 8 users can download the latest Internet Explorer Preview from the official test drive site.

Tech Coalition is Formed to Stop Phishing

Phishing emails are a huge problem and one that numerous attempts to rectify have so far failed to achieve.  Now a large group of tech companies have joined forces with a start-up company called Agari to try and stop phishing emails from even reaching your inbox.  Microsoft, Google, AOL, Yahoo! and other firms have all joined forces on the project so they can share information from phishing emails.

This data will be analysed by Agari to see how phishing attacks can be identified and prevented.  The company has actually been in operation since 2009 and helps protect over 1 billion email accounts from these types of attack.  The company already collects data from around 1.5 billion emails a day, though they don’t collect the actual email messages.

Instead the company just passes on malicious URLs in the messages to the relevant companies who’s name is being used in the phishing message.  Google said it expects the new arrangement to benefit Gmail users as more mail senders will now be authenticating email and implementing common phishing blocking policies.

Cnet reported that Daniel Raskin, the vice-president of marketing for Agari said…

“Facebook can go into the Agari console and see charts and graphs of all the activity going on in their e-mail channel (on their domains and third-party solutions) and see when an attack is going on in a bar chart of spam hitting Yahoo.  They receive a real-time alert and they can construct a policy to push out to carriers (that says) when you see this thing happening don’t deliver it, reject it.”

Phishing emails aren’t just a nuisance, they cost businesses millions every year in credit card insurance payouts, a cost which is inevitably passed on in interest charges.  The sophistication of phishing messages, which purport to be from a bank, business or website asking you to log in to confirm your security details, or offering you a fantastic deal that doesn’t really exist, again to get your personal details including those for your credit card.

The simple rule is that no bank, company or website will EVER email you asking you to log in and confirm your details.  Modern web browsers will highlight the actual domain name for the site you are visiting, for example PayPal.com and you can see if you are being diverted to a different domain.  The best rule is that if you receive an email purporting to be from, say Bank of America, then never click on the link.  Instead manually go to the bank or company’s website and log in yourself.

Agari says they have been operating in “stealth” mode for the last few years to as to try not to attract too much attention to their work.  Currently they analyse 50% of all email traffic in the US.  Cnet say…

The company aggregates and analyzes the data and provides it to about 50 e-commerce, financial services and social network customers, including Facebook and YouSendIt, who can then push out authentication policies to the e-mail providers when they see an attack is happening.

This new alliance forms no guarantee that phishing emails will be eradicated, and it is still up to the end user to use caution when opening any suspicious email.

Embed Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus Without JavaScript

Search engines like Google Search use a page’s loading time as a signal when they compute that page’s ranking in their search engine results. Webmasters have a lot to tweak, from the server backbone to the scripts they use and embed, and the images and media they post; Everything has an impact on the page loading time. Social media buttons have become very popular with webmasters in recent years. The majority implements the buttons either with the help of plugins or by copying and pasting the code that social networks like Facebook offer directly.

The majority of methods use JavaScript to trigger the functionality. The issue here is that external scripts increase the page loading time. If you load to many scripts, your website could be punished for this by the search engines by reducing the page’s position in the rankings. Depending on the number of social media buttons that you embed, you could be loading multiple external JavaScript files.

But JavaScript can also be used for tracking purposes. Visitors who load a web page with external JavaScript will always at least pop up in the external service’s access logs.

The only positive effect for the webmaster is that users can vote for their articles on the linked social networking sites. But this is also achievable without JavaScript. The benefit of that solution? Faster page loading times and guaranteed no user tracking.

The following solution has been created by Daniel Pataki. It is a solution for WordPress, if you use a different script or software you may need to modify the code accordingly.

The code consists of two parts. First CSS code that you need to add to your blog’s stylesheet, and then the code that displays the links to the social networking sites on the website.

CSS Code:

You need the following sprite image that contains all four icons. This speeds up the loading time as only one image needs to be loaded instead of four separate ones. Place it in the /img/ directory of your theme folder or alter the background:url code to place it somewhere else.

sprite

.social_icon {
background:url("img/sprite.png");
display:block;
width:33px;
float:left;
margin:0 3px 0 0;
height:32px;
opacity:0.8;
filter:alpha(opacity=80);
}
.social_icon:hover {
opacity:1;
filter:alpha(opacity=100)
}
.social_icon.twitter {
background-position:-33px 0;
}
.social_icon.googleplus {
background-position:-99px 0;
}
.social_icon.print {
background-position:-66px 0;
}

WordPress single.php code

You need to add the following code to WordPress’ single.php file.

<div class='social'>
<a href='http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=<?php the_permalink() ?>' class='social_icon facebook' rel="nofollow"></a>
<a href='https://twitter.com/share?url=<?php the_permalink() ?>' class='social_icon twitter' rel="nofollow"></a>
<a class='social_icon googleplus' href="https://plusone.google.com/_/+1/confirm?hl=en&url=<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="nofollow" ></a>
<a href='javascript:window.print()' class='social_icon print'></a>
<div style='clear:both'></div>
</div>

The functionality should be available immediately. Users who click on a social networking icon are taken to the selected site where they can post about the web page that they have originated from. The page url is automatically included in the post.

I hope this helps some of you out there who want to offer functional social networking buttons without the JavaScript.

Update: Have added rel=”nofollow” to all external links.
